WHITE MOUNTAINS

The White Mountains of Crete - the large, high mountain range in the west of the island, centred in the region of Chania, is known as Lefka Ori because of the white granite rocks on its treeless peaks, which appear dazzlingly bright in summer and covered with snow in winter. The beauty of the White Mountains range is incomparable, and no matter how many times you cross it, you cannot be sure of all its beauties.
This impressive mountain range divides the island in the north and south and is interspersed with peaks, rugged gorges and rough terrain that leads to sudden slopes on the south coast. This Cretan landscape shapes the character of the island and its inhabitants.
The White Mountains or Lefka Ori occupy a large part of the centre of West Crete and are the main feature of the region. They are mainly composed of limestone, ranging from light grey to bluish or black in colour. The "White Mountains" get their name from the perpetual white or off-white colour of their peaks, as the off-white of the limestone mixes with the snow that covers the peaks until late spring in summer and autumn.
There are few main roads leading into the White Mountains. From the north, roads lead to Omalos and the entrance of the Samaria Gorge, and the road to Chora Sfakion passes through the Askifou plateau further to the east.
here is a succulent tavern inland in the village of Vafes, which can be reached via tiny winding country roads. But it's worth the effort! Here time stands still and you feel like you're deep in Crete. You will eat in the quiet stone courtyard of a recently restored old monastery. On the menu: fresh mushrooms from the region, antikristo (pieces of lamb cooked slowly around an ember), tzatziki prepared with local yoghurt, etc. Local wine in a pitcher and raki to drink in moderation!
